I decided to review this as a box set rather than each individual book mostly because I'm lazy, oh, and also because I get to be the first one (well, at least on Amazon I am). The other reason is that I read through it as though it were one book - finishing one and starting straight on to the next. It was glorious. I highly recommend it.Each of the books in this series is easily a five star, so that makes the math rather easy for figuring out the number of stars to give the box set.
Each book is a fast, entertaining, and fun read - almost deceptively so. There you are, reading what you think is a quirky, humorous, light novel, when from nowhere comes this passage that makes you stop and think in the most unexpected ways. And this happens throughout the series. I was most of the way through the second book when I began to realize the depth the author had put into the world she built. And I was finishing the third book when I actually took notice of the series title: The Rise of the Discordant. See that word "Rise"? That meant things were only going to get more complicated for our protagonists, and it did in the best of ways.
The story is told in first person with each chapter switching to another character's viewpoint. Each character is well developed with a unique voice, and I found getting different perspectives on the same event to be a lot of what I considered fun about this series.
I don't think this necessarily ruins anything, but there's a phrase in the beginning of the last chapter of the last book that I absolutely love. I want to frame it and put it on my wall, but for now I'll simply use it to close out my review.
From the chaos comes form, from form, the divide, from the divide, balance, and from the balance, order. From order the need to rebel. from rebellion, upset, from upset, anarchy, and from anarchy, chaos.

Utterly different than most. Thought-provoking and absorbing story that was hard to put down. Loved the escape from traditional thinking about good, bad and split souls.
Great story and great writing. Really first class books. I loved this series and couldn't out it down up to the very last word.
I jumped at the chance to download and read this quirky series and I was not disappointed! Vastly entertaining plots and characters with surprising turns and interesting twists on some already-familiar concepts. Would recommend for fans of books like Hitchhiker's Guide or authors like Terry Pratchett and Piers Anthony.
An amazing storyline, which is creative, exciting, and entertaining. The pages are filled with witty, sarcastic, and amusing dialogue, though at times it becomes quite heartwarming. The battle between the agents of Order and the minions of Chaos is never-ending. The triad of Order is made up of a guardian, warrior, and observer, but the small city of Blackbird has lost their much needed guardian due to burn-out. Seth, the Observer, is overwhelmed with his empathetic powers, as the Discordant of Chaos bombard the city. He gets help from the newly appointed Warrior, Desmond, and a coven of witches and other mystics. There’s even a lesser demon called Bogie who seems willing to help.
There is so much to love about this series, which is extremely well-written. The characters are all quirky and wonderful. The storyline takes all sorts of twists and turns. I really can’t recommend this entire set enough, in my opinion, it’s absolutely brilliant!
Once again, I find myself reviewing a book by Christina McMullen. Or rather, I should say "books" as this is a box set. I've never done a review of a box set before and I'm still not sure exactly how that should be done but I'm going to give it my best shot.
Each book builds on the previous one and segues flawlessly into the next. For me, reading them this way was an enjoyable experience and it kept the magic going in this tale of good vs. evil. Or rather, it is a tale of order vs. disorder.
The story takes place in a small Midwestern town and is told in the first person using the POVs of different characters, a method for which I usually don't care, but in this case, I felt it worked quite well because it afforded greater insight into the thoughts and motives of each individual.
As you might expect, some folk are given the task of fighting this, er, fight.
There are the agents of Order, chosen by the creator to be such after they've met their demise in some violent way. There are psychics and witches fighting alongside them, and then there are what I would call some gray area folk who also join the brouhaha, including a decidedly different bartender in a bar that's central to the story. They don't always agree or get along and there was my occasional thought of, "This is a GOOD guy?" but they're determined to keep at bay the denizens of Chaos who are hell-bent on causing mayhap and mayhem, and major disruption in the world. Theirs is a tough job and all isn't necessarily as it seems (wherein I had the occasional thought of, "This is a BAD guy?") and the outcome of the battle against the denizens of Chaos isn't clear.
The take on the Creator of Everything is unique but I found myself nodding and thinking, "Yeah, that makes sense". There is a dark thread that runs throughout (I mean, there ARE all sorts of dark creatures such as vampires, werewolves, etc. which means there's bound to be some maiming and killing) but, after all, this wouldn't be a proper McMullen tale without some chuckles and believe me, they're there. Still, the story makes you stop and think.
And I stopped and thought - several times - and in the end, what I thought was I was sorry to get to the end! I wanted more of this never-ending story! Anybody that likes paranormal fantasy will love this!
